How to Respond If You Get a Letter from the IRS

Here’s what to do if you find an official envelope from the IRS in your mailbox.

  1. Don’t Ignore It

This might seem obvious, but a surprising number of people toss IRS letters aside, especially if they’re unsure what it means. Don’t make that mistake. Ignoring IRS correspondence can lead to penalties, interest, or worse — enforcement action.

📌 Tip: Always open IRS letters right away and read them carefully.

  1. Read the Letter Closely

The IRS sends different types of notices for different reasons. Some common types include:

  • Notice of Balance Due – You owe taxes.
  • Notice of Refund Adjustment – They’ve changed the amount of your refund.
  • Request for Documentation – They need more information.
  • CP2000 Notice – There’s a discrepancy between your return and what was reported to the IRS.

At the top of the letter, you’ll usually find the notice number (like CP2000, CP14, etc.). This number gives a clue about the purpose of the letter.

  1. Check the Deadline to Respond

Almost every IRS letter includes a response deadline — typically 30 days. Pay attention to this. Even if you disagree with the notice, failing to respond by the deadline could automatically result in additional taxes, penalties, or a lost opportunity to dispute.

📅 Pro tip: Mark that date on your calendar and don’t wait until the last minute.

  1. Compare It to Your Records

Pull out a copy of your filed tax return, W-2s, 1099s, or other documents related to the notice. Compare what the IRS says to what you filed. Sometimes the IRS receives third-party info (from your employer, banks, etc.) that may not match your return.

  1. Don’t Panic – It Might Be a Simple Fix

Sometimes it’s as easy as confirming a piece of missing info, sending a copy of a form, or agreeing to a small adjustment. If the IRS is right and you agree, follow the instructions in the letter to pay or respond.

If you don’t agree, you usually have the right to submit a written explanation or appeal.

  1. Avoid Calling the IRS Unless Absolutely Necessary

It’s often more efficient to respond in writing, as phone wait times can be hours long. But if your letter includes a specific contact number, and the issue seems urgent, it’s okay to call. Just have your letter, tax return, and relevant documents ready.
